People & Talent Club - Key life milestones & generations at work
Join us to learn more about the Gen Z and how does it shape today's work places.

Ipsos research shows that despite valuing key life milestones (homeownership, parenthood, marriage) as much as—or more than—older generations, Gen Z are far less confident they'll actually reach them. In fact, Gen Z say they have higher expectations of owning a pet than having a child, despite valuing parenthood more highly. We see this play out already: British women are having their first child 5 years later than in 1975, and marriage across OECD countries is happening 6 years later than in 1990. This isn't a shift in values but in attainability, and it means a newly emerging life stage is opening up between finishing school and the traditional milestones of marriage, children, and homeownership. For HR communities, this means the youngest employees are at a different life stage than their predecessors were 20–40 years ago, requiring different kinds of support.
Ipsos's global employee surveys also reveal a broader workplace lifecycle shaped by distinct challenges at each age cohort—alongside encouraging areas of unity, such as similar levels of feeling able to be oneself, feeling recognised, and experiencing an inclusive culture across age bands.
On education: GB stands out among 31 countries as the least likely to see a university degree as important to success or good value for money. France, meanwhile, is the most pessimistic about young people's futures, ranking last among 31 countries in believing young people have a bright future or will live better than their parents.
Ipsos's upcoming Work Monitor (release TBC, likely late October/early November) will bring new data on what a successful career looks like and how employees perceive their organisation's responsiveness to feedback, broken down by age and region. Across all of these themes, Ipsos can also provide a GB/France-specific lens, comparing the two markets with each other and against the broader European or global picture.
To balance the research perspective with a practical one, we should also bring in an HR Director to share their own experience and a concrete case study on how they're managing these generational shifts on the ground.
The session will be moderated by Melanie Stancliffe, Employment Partner at Freeths.
