The World Ahead: Top 10 trends for 2026 – Breakfast briefing with Tom Standage, Deputy Editor, The Economist and Editor, “The World Ahead 2026"

On 12th November, members attended a breakfast briefing with Tom Standage, Deputy Editor of The Economist and Editor, “The World Ahead 2026".

As 2026 approaches, Tom Standage shared his insights into what we can expect, in Europe, and further afield. He predicts a year defined by turbulence and transformation. Political uncertainty, rapid technological change, and the escalating climate crisis will leave no region untouched.

In Europe, fiscal pressures from widening deficits and higher defence budgets will test the balance between economic growth and political stability. Across the Atlantic, the United States faces a historic moment: the 250th anniversary of the Constitution will unfold amid divisive political debates and consequential midterm elections — events that could reshape its global standing.

While the climate outlook is complex, there are reasons for optimism. Breakthroughs in clean technology — notably in geothermal and solar power — are emerging from unexpected regions, including Africa and the Global South, offering fresh momentum for sustainability.

For businesses, these intertwined challenges demand agility and awareness. Success in 2026 will hinge on the ability to anticipate and adapt to the shifting political, technological, and economic landscape.
